Highway Maintenance Tech I or II - Nolan County Maintenance Office
General Transportation Tech I:
Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
General Transportation Tech II:
Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
The essential duties for the General Transportation Tech I include:
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
Additional duties for General Transportation Tech II include:
- Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
Minimum Qualifications:
General Transportation Tech I requires the following:
Education: None in formal education required.
Experience: No experience required.
General Transportation Tech II requires the following:
Education: None in formal education required.
Experience: 1 YEAR transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Salary Range: $31,144. - $52,045 per year
